Usage
=====

Cinder provides an infrastructure for managing volumes in OpenStack.
Originally, this project was the Nova component called ``nova-volume``
and starting from the Folsom OpenStack release it has become an independent
project.

This file provides the sample configurations for different use cases:

* Pillar sample of a basic Cinder configuration:

  The pillar structure defines ``cinder-api`` and ``cinder-scheduler`` inside
  the ``controller`` role and ``cinder-volume`` inside the to ``volume``
  role.

  The ``default_availability_zone`` is used when a volume has been created,
  without specifying a zone in the ``create`` request as this zone must exist
  in your configuration.

  The ``storage_availability_zone`` is an actual zone where the node belongs to
  and must be specified per each node.

**Enhanced logging with logging.conf**

By default ``logging.conf`` is disabled.
You can enable per-binary ``logging.conf`` by setting the following
parameters:

* ``openstack_log_appender``
   Set to ``true`` to enable ``log_config_append`` for all OpenStack
   services

* ``openstack_fluentd_handler_enabled``
   Set to ``true`` to enable FluentHandler for all Openstack services

* ``openstack_ossyslog_handler_enabled``
   Set to ``true`` to enable OSSysLogHandler for all Openstack services

Only WatchedFileHandler, OSSysLogHandler, and FluentHandler are available.

Configure cinder to use service user tokens:
========
Long-running operations such as snapshot can sometimes overrun the expiry of the user token.
In such cases, post operations such as cleaning up after a snapshot can fail when the
cinder service needs to cleanup resources.

This pillar enables cinder to use service user tokens to supplement the regular user token
used to initiate the operation. The identity service (keystone) will then authenticate
a request using the service user token if the user token has already expired.

Upgrades
========

Each openstack formula provide set of phases (logical bloks) that will help to
build flexible upgrade orchestration logic for particular components. The list
of phases and theirs descriptions are listed in table below:

Don't manage services scheduling while upgrade
----------------------------------------------
For some special cases, don't manage services scheduling both enable and disable
before and after upgrade procedure.

If 'manage_service_maintenance: true' or not present - default behavior, disable services
before upgrade and enable it after upgrade.
If 'manage_service_maintenance: false' - don't disable and don't enable upgraded services
scheduling before and after upgrade.

Execute database maintenance tasks
----------------------------------
Cleanup stale records from cinder database to make it smaller.
This is helpful before any upgrade activity.
It is safe to execute it generally without maintenance window same as online db_sync.

Enable this pillar:

       db_purge:
         enabled: True

Execute state cinder.db.db_cleanup to purge stale records:

It is possible to pass days parameter.
If you skip setting it, all records would be archived/purged:
